Engaging business and community
26 July 2010
The recently released HE-BCI (Higher Education Business and Community Interaction survey) Survey 2008/09 has revealed that LJMU has maintained its position as one of the leading Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in the UK for interaction with business and the community.
The University’s reputation for successful engagement with organisations in the private, public and third sectors is reflected in its ranking of 48th out of 160 HEIs in the UK for this activity, with the value of LJMU’s interaction with business and the community totalling £17.2m.
LJMU benchmarking
The period covered by the latest HE-BCI survey – 2008/09 - saw LJMU undertaking a broad range of high quality commercial enterprise, technology transfer and student entrepreneurship activity with clients from the private, public and third sectors. This was converted into impressive figures that showed sales breaking the £5m mark for the first time.
This strong performance is reflected in the HE-BCI survey findings that reveal that as well as performing strongly against its own budgets and targets, LJMU compares favourably with other HEIs across the country.
LJMU’s key benchmarks include:
- 33rd in the UK for value of Continued Professional Development courses
- 41st in the UK for the value of consultancy contracts
- 10th in the UK for income from regeneration and development programmes
- 9th in the UK for number of ‘disclosures’, that is the number of staff/student ideas registered before being investigated with a view to establishing their potential for commercialisation
- 49th in the UK for number of graduate business start-ups established
- 25th in the UK for number of staff business start-ups established
- 59th in the UK for income from collaborative research
- 43rd in the UK for income from contract research
Jon Barrett, LJMU’s Commercial Director, said: "It is encouraging to see that the University’s benchmarking against other UK HEIs in 2008/09 remained strong."
"This year – 2009/10 – we have seen an even greater focus on return on investment, in terms of income generation, growing our reputation – both at home and overseas - and fostering an entrepreneurial ethos among our student and staff communities. These are exciting times for some of the University’s key spin-out companies, for our growing portfolio of international contracts and for our dynamic programme of entrepreneurship training and development.
"We look forward to building on our solid HE-BCI survey results and maintaining our track record for being one of the top Universities in the country for engaging with business and industry."
