Raleigh Graduate Bursary Award
18 August 2010
Last year Raleigh launched its Graduate Bursary Award to assist recent graduates with their fundraising to take part in an overseas charity expedition. Two students from LJMU have so far been successful in gaining a place on Raleigh expeditions.
Christina Ambrose, a Media and Cultural Studies graduate went on expedition to India last Autumn and has since been successful in securing a volunteer staff member role on a further Raleigh expedition this coming Autumn. She commented: "I have learnt that I am capable of more than I realised, and things are easier and more enjoyable when you just give it a go. I have also learnt it is possible to become friends and communicate with people even if you don’t speak the same language!
"I am going to look for a job as a fundraiser or something similar for a charitable organisation. Raleigh has helped me become more interested in charity work in different countries."
The Graduate Bursary Award part-funds the cost of a Raleigh expedition to Borneo, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, or India. Graduates gain the opportunity to contribute to community and environmental work in remote communities with a challenging adventure phase, and will be required to fundraise £1000 towards the expedition and pay for flights, vaccinations and kit.
