18 January 2011
LJMU was identified as the highest ranking university in the UK’s Top 100 Employers list for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, appearing at position 48th in Stonewall’s 2011 Workplace Equality Index.
The Index is based on a range of key indicators which this year included the largest ever confidential survey of lesbian, gay and bisexual employees, with over 9,000 participants.
Meriel Box, LJMU's Head of Staff Development, within Academic Enhancement, and Chair of the LGBT Equality Network commented:
"It’s a tremendous achievement for LJMU to be the leading Higher Education employer in cutting-edge, diversity practice. We have made significant progress improving our position from 85th in 2010. We will be celebrating with staff and students. It’s recognition for the University at an international level for our prospective staff and students.”
LJMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Brown added:
“This is an outstanding achievement for staff development and displays that our policy of continual improvement at the workplace is effective and that diversity is respected, valued and celebrated at LJMU.”
“Competition was fiercer than ever to secure a place on the 2011 Top Employers List,' said Ben Summerskill, Stonewall Chief Executive. 'We received more entries than any previous year. The Index is a powerful tool used by Britain's 1.7 million gay employees and 150,000 gay university students to decide where to take their talent and skills.”
