Matron Bibi Florina Abdullah, Registrar of the Nursing Board Malaysia (NBM) and Principal Matron of Malaysia, led a delegation of 14 Board members on a visit to the School of Nursing and Primary Care Practice in Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences earlier this month.

The LJMU visit was part of the Board’s tour of UK Higher Education Institutions and the Royal College of Nursing. Matron Bibi and her colleagues are seeking to improve nursing practices in Malaysia through benchmarking and by exploring developmental opportunities in the UK’s post-qualification nursing education provision.

The Malaysian Ministry of Health recently indicated that there are approximately 40,000 registered nurses in Malaysia - 80% of their total health care personnel. They are now seeking to develop flexible educational opportunities that will enhance nursing as a profession and will help to recruit and retain nurses in Malaysia.

Ann Deane, LJMU’s Health Programmes Project Lead for Malaysia, said: “Malaysia is a rapidly developing country with a new industrial economy. Nursing in Malaysia is being charged to undergo rapid modernisation to provide quality healthcare for its citizens. This modernisation is necessary to meet the Malaysian Government ambitions laid out in Vision 2020 when Malaysia aims to become a fully developed nation.”

Matron Bibi invited Professor Godfrey Mazhindu Dean of the Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences, and Shirley Congdon, Assistant Director of the School of Nursing and Primary Care Practice, to present papers at the 2nd International Nursing Conference in Sabah (Malaysia) on the 9 and 10 March. The theme of the conference is ‘Big, Bold and Beautiful’.

Professor Godfrey Mazhindu commented: “I thank Matron Bibi and her colleagues for finding the time in their busy schedule to visit us LJMU. We look forward to developing mutual partnerships with our colleagues in Malaysia and to supporting their efforts towards achievement of the Vision 2020 to which Malaysia aspires.”
