Print Strategy

First phase of implementation begins

LJMU has begun the process of renewing its PRINT equipment, with the first new multifunctional devices (MFDs) arriving in the Tithebarn Building and JMU Tower this week.

Over the next three weeks, staff from IKON, LJMU's PRINT supplier, locally appointed PRINT champions and staff in CIS will be ensuring that the new MFD's are delivered, located and connected ready for use in the other areas of the university designated in the first phase - the LRCs, Kingsway House, Castle House, Egerton Court, Roscoe Court, Rodney House, and 10 Rodney Street.

The new equipment immediately replaces the old photocopier fleet equipment and rented printers. These obsolete devices will be removed about three weeks after the installation of the new equipment. This gives time for staff to become fully familiar with the new devices that offer printing, photocopying, scanning and replacement to FAX machines.

The contractual agreement with IKON means that the new devices will be charged on a usage basis. Consumables will be provided, so only paper will need to be acquired locally.

It is envisaged that existing printing devices, for instance local deskjet and laser printers, will no longer be necessary or cost effective to retain. The PRINT Strategy Board is looking at options for the disposal of these items of equipment and any surplus stock of print cartridges and other consumables.

The Board will be considering at its next meeting on 12 November the likely locations for the next phase of renewal and the dates for this. Once consultations have taken place, details of the locations should be confirmed by early December ready for new equipment installation in January.

In the meantime, staff are asked to avoid purchasing any new printing devices or buying consumable items which might not be required.

Peter Hinton, Executive Director, who is chairing the Print Strategy Board, comments, "This is a major logistical exercise that not only brings different equipment but introduces new ways of working. I'm grateful to the PRINT Champions for playing a key role in ensuring a smooth change. With over 130 new devices being installed within a four week period, there will be some hitches and uncharted difficulties. So far things are going well and we are learning from the experience of those pioneering the first phase."
