First year student fashions win

17 July 2008

A first year fashion student has won a prestigious competition and received glowing praise from one of the industry's largest retailers.

Amie Price won the fashion category of the Northern Design Competition with her unique, feminine dress featuring a seahorse print. To enter the competition she was required to submit sketches and a written description of the garment and then, after being shortlisted by a judging panel chaired by renowned designer Wayne Hemingway, she was asked to supply the finished product for display.

Her prizes include £1,000 and the chance to have her work displayed in exclusive boutique Aqua Couture in Leeds.

Talking about her win, Amie said: "These past few weeks have been unbelievable, it all seems too good to be true. Winning the competition was fantastic. My dress is being shown in the window of Aqua Couture, which is next to Harvey Nichols in Leeds, and my collection will also be showcased at there, with a view to it being sold in the shop. My dress is also going to be taken to various exhibitions, so it's all great exposure for my work.

"Taking part in the competition has been really good because I've met so many different people, not just designers but other competitors. I've become good friends with them and they'll be great contacts for the future."

Alongside the competition win, Amie has also been praised by one of the country's leading fashion retailers.

After recently completing a work placement at Warehouse in London, Robbie Sinclair, designer and Amie's mentor throughout the two weeks, commented on her talents, saying: "Amie was amazing, the whole design team loved her. I can't believe she is only a first year. She was given loads of different tasks and completed them all really well. Most work placement students just do mostly photocopying but all the designers wanted her to do artworks for them because she was so good. She is the best work placement student we have had in a long time and she is welcome back anytime. From now on other work placement students have some very big shoes to fill."

Lecturer Carol Ryder said Amie Price was a name to look out for in the future: "Amie's work is very impressive and to have won the competition and received such praise from a leading retailer when she is only a first year student clearly demonstrates that her ability is beyond her years."
