RAE subject success

15 January 2009

According to the Times Higher Education Tables of Excellence, LJMU is one of the top performing post-92 universities for Architecture and Built Environment, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, General Engineering, Physics and Sports-Related Studies.

The Times Higher Education devised their tables of excellence to rank institutions according to both individual subject successes and their overall quality following the publication of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) results.

Institutionally, LJMU has improved its overall research ranking since the last RAE in 2001. We are now ranked 81st out of 132 institutions - an overall improvement of 5 places.

In terms of specific RAE subject ratings, LJMU has performed well against other post-92 universities and is ranked:

  • 1st for Architecture and Built Environment
  • 1st for Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • 1st for General Engineering
  • 1st for Sports-Related Studies
  • 2nd for Anthropology
  • 2nd for Physics
  • 3rd for Biological Sciences
  • 7th for Nursing and Midwifery
  • 8th for Subjects Allied to Medicine
Professor Andy Young, LJMU's Director of Research, said:
"Our success in the RAE is due to the exceptional quality of our staff and their commitment to undertaking research of national and international significance. LJMU is committed to investing further in original and rigorous research due to the important contributions this can bring to the student experience, skills training, and knowledge transfer with commerce and industry."
