Languages NOW event success
08 January 2009
NWULA explains the benefits of learning languages to schoolchildren.
Over 400 Year 9 pupils from across the North West visited LJMU to participate in Languages NOW, an all-day event to encourage young people to learn foreign languages.
Attended by 20 different schools from around the region, the event was organised by the North West University Language Alliance (NWULA), including LJMU and the universities of Bolton, Central Lancashire, Chester, Edge Hill, Lancaster, Liverpool, Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan and Salford.
Throughout the day the pupils had the opportunity to take part in language taster sessions, where they tried out new languages they have not perviously studied, including Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Finnish and Japanese. They also took part in a poster session which highlighted the benefits of studying languages and were given the chance to use the language they study in school to chat to native-speakers about life in their country.
