Moira Helbert, a Team Leader in the Faculty of Business and Law, became the first LJMU staff member to be awarded with the 'Developing Professional Practice' (SEDA) Award this month.

Moira, who began her employment at LJMU 23 years ago as a cleaner, took part in the Business and Law pilot programme - designed to ensure the delivery of a consistently professional service and that HE staff training needs are recognised and invested in.

Focussing on developing a greater understanding of the HE environment and the need for professional practice within job roles, the programme helps individuals identify their own training needs via self reflection - which encourages ownership of the individual's development.

Achieving the Award has helped to secure a promotion for Moira, who commented on how the programme has helped her gain a better understanding of her own development needs:  

"I was able to apply what I had learnt to work situations which enabled me to reflect more on how I deal with people and situations."

"This is a great opportunity for staff to further develop themselves, particularly if they have not been involved in study for some time."

Anyone supporting teaching and learning, either directly or indirectly, within the University can attend the programme - which is particularly relevant for those working in support roles within the faculties. It is a flexible course delivered locally, designed to fit around the working responsibilities of staff.
