Friends of the Foundation for Citizenship

27 January 2009

The Roscoe Foundation for Citizenship at LJMU, which explores what it means to be a good citizen in the 21st Century, has launched a new scheme appealing for 'Friends of the Foundation'.

The Foundation, which organises the free annual Roscoe Lecture Series, enables people from across Merseyside to come together and explore what it is to be a good citizen in today's society. Through its Good Citizenship Awards, the Foundation also celebrates the often overlooked contributions that young people, as well LJMU students and members of staff, make to community life. In a time of increasing diversity and change, such debate and recognition is becoming more important than ever before.

This work is possible thanks to the generosity of individuals who support the Foundation by making a donation. If you too enjoy the lectures and would like more young people to be recognised through our Awards programme, you may want to consider joining as a Friend of the Foundation.

This new scheme invites you to show your support by making a minimum annual gift to the Foundation of one hundred pounds, which can be paid in instalments over the year if preferred. To acknowledge this generous support, Friends are invited to the pre-lecture Receptions in the company of the Speaker and have access to reserved seating and pre-allocated tickets, particularly for the most popular of lectures.

Lord David Alton, Director of the Foundation, said: "We have already had a lot of interest from colleagues here at LJMU, which is very encouraging and demonstrates how much you enjoy the lectures and share our passion for promoting an ethos of good citizenship. By becoming a Friend of the Foundation, your support will enable us to reward and encourage more young people through our Awards programme while also extending public debate on key issues through our acclaimed Lecture Series."

For more than a decade, LJMU has invited some of the country's leading commentators to join the people of Liverpool in discussing the issues that really matter to them.

The 12th Roscoe Lecture Series will commence on Thursday 29 January at the Philharmonic Hall with a lecture entitled Hitler & Stalin: the 20th Century's Cruellest Tyrants?  by acclaimed author and journalist Anne Applebaum. The Lecture Series is themed History Lessons: Citizenship, democracy and the struggle against tyranny and explores the link between citizenship and history.

All lectures are free but entrance is by ticket only. To reserve your tickets, please contact LJMU's Conference and Event Services team on 0151 231 3668 or email roscoelectures@ljmu.ac.uk
