Campus Developments update
25 March 2009
At LJMU we are midway through a significant £180m masterplan to change and develop the three university campuses to meet the needs of staff and students today as well as building for future generations.
Money has been invested in major building projects as well as the more day to day operation of maintenance, refurbishment and underpinning structures such as IT and car parking.
A number of projects are now moving forward across the University and we are about to submit planning applications against the next phase of building works at LJMU.
The Campus Development webpages will provide detailed information about each of the projects as they move forward, the following is a brief overview of what’s to come…
City Campus
Byrom Street Cladding
*
Funding has been secured to provide a significant upgrade to the external facia of the whole Byrom Street complex, including the ten storey tower and the engineering buildings at the back of the campus.
This is a bespoke aluminium cladding system with high performance windows that will make the building watertight and will lift the façade so that it complements the new buildings completed and planned for the Byrom Street campus.
The cladding will overlap the existing external walls so that staff and students are not overly disrupted throughout the installation.
Planning permission has been approved and work will commence on site in May with a completion date set for April 2010.
The Tom Reilly Building

The Tom Reilly Building is progressing well with the external shell nearly complete. Work will then begin on the internal fitting out of the building with occupation planned for the end of the year.
Henry Cotton Building
The University has negotiated a continuation of the lease for the Henry Cotton Building in order to provide accommodation for the Faculty of Health and specific workshop space and labs for the Faculty of Technology and Environment.
Tithebarn Street

Work will commence on the refurbishment of the Avril Robarts Centre later this year to accommodate the central student service model as part of the implementation of SERIG.
IM Marsh Campus

*
The Project Board have now approved the final designs for a new building at IM Marsh which is due to be submitted for planning permission next month following extensive consultation with the surrounding neighbourhood.
The new building will be situated within the IM Marsh campus and will provide teaching accommodation, office space as well as a central social aspect for all staff and students.
The project team are now considering a number of models related to explicit pedestrianisation of the site to ensure maximum safety for everyone who uses the facilities and the location and management of existing and future car parks.
The Learning Resource Centre will also be remodelled to encompass the new service model for student facing services.
Mount Pleasant Campus
Art and Design Academy

The School of Art and Design, Tate café and Conference and Events Services moved into the building for the beginning of semester 2. Essential snagging work is continuing and a programme of works is now planned for final completion of the building over Easter and during the summer period.
The Tate café is available for staff and students and will be open to the general public once the building work is complete.
The project team have been successful in securing funding for landscaping the area surrounding the Art and Design Academy to create an art and sculpture park for the general public. Discussions are now on-going with the Archdiocese, the Science Park and Liverpool Vision to create a suitable and appropriate design scheme.
Clarence Street
*
The project team are now in final discussions about the design of the new development that will replace the current Clarence Street building to accommodate the Faculty of Business and Law, the Screen School and to provide a flagship University building on the site. The proposed design of the building will be shared with all stakeholders once it has been agreed and then submitted for planning permission.
The Clarence Street building itself is due to be vacated by is current occupiers during the summer so that essential work can begin on site. The School of Social Science will move into 68 Hope Street for the beginning of Semester 1 and will remain there during the construction period. Student facing staff temporarily located on the 5th Floor of Clarence street will move back into the newly refurbished Aldham Robarts Centre when work is complete in October.

Work is now underway at the ARC to accommodate the new combined service model for students. The building phase is due for completion in October 2009 but the service will be in operation for new and continuing students from Semester 1.
You can follow the progress of each of the projects through the Campus Development website which will increase in detail as more information is released.
