LJMU Honorary Fellowships announced

LJMU has released details of the Honorary Fellowships and Corporate Awards to be conferred during this year's graduation ceremonies.
LJMU's Honorary Fellowships are given in recognition of outstanding achievement by an individual in a given field or profession and to those who exemplify LJMU's ethos to 'dream, plan and achieve.'
Vice Chancellor Professor Michael Brown said:
"Our Honorary Fellows are inspirational figures for our graduates. Their professions and achievements are very different but they have demonstrated the same great dedication to pursue their passion and excel in their chosen fields. Not only have they attained their personal goals but have exceeded them and we are delighted to welcome them into the University and give them the recognition they rightly deserve.”
This year LJMU will award Honorary Fellowships to:
- Peter Bullivant to recognise his outstanding contribution to the legal profession. Peter specialises in the areas of commercial property, private client and corporate law. He established his own practice, Bullivant Jones, in 1970 and guided the merger of the firm with Hill Dickinson in 2004, where he is now Partner.
- Keith Cameron for outstanding contributions to professional human resource management and the development of skilled people. After retiring in 2001, following 30 years as a director in six major companies, Keith came out of retirement in 2004 to become Human Resources Director of Marks and Spencer where he spearheaded important changes at the once ailing retailer, contributing to a reversal in the company's fortunes. Now retired (again) Keith is a valued member of the LJMU World of Work (WoW) Advisory Board.
- Sir Philip Craven in honour of his outstanding contributions to the development of the Paralympics. A five-time Paralympian, Sir Philip represented Great Britain in wheelchair basketball from 1969 to 1993 and swimming in 1972, before becoming the President of the International Paralympic Committee. In 1991 he was awarded an MBE for services to wheelchair basketball and in 2005 received his knighthood for services to Paralympic sport. He is also a member of the International Olympic Committee, a prominent figure on the London 2012 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and also serves on the Foundation Board of the World Anti-Doping Agency and the Administration
Council for the International Committee for Fair Play. - Pauline Daniels in recognition of her outstanding and multiple contributions to the performing arts. One of Britain’s best known comediennes, Birkenhead-born Pauline is a star of stage and screen. She first found fame as the first female comic on TV show The Comedians and has performed at various venues across the globe. She is currently heavily involved with the Liverpool Actors’ Studio.
- Dr Simon Fishel for his outstanding contributions to the field of fertility treatment including embryology and IVF. Dr Fishel is an acclaimed international scientist and is regarded as one of the world’s most eminent specialists in the treatment of infertility. He was part of the team that led to the first IVF birth in 1978 and has pioneered several IVF technologies since that time. He has published over 200 papers and received many international awards for his groundbreaking work.
- Ian Smith for outstanding leadership in the ICT business and the development of skilled people. A highly regarded businessman, Ian was Regional Senior Vice President of Oracle UK from 1999 until November 2008, when he established his own executive coaching and mentoring consultancy. He is a member of the Board of Business in the Community, chairs their South East Leadership team, and sits on their Education Leadership Team. He sits on the CBI Education & Training Committee and has held the post of President of the Institute of Customer Service since its inception over ten years ago. In February 2009 he was confirmed as Chairman of Young Enterprise UK.
- Rita Tushingham for her outstanding and sustained contributions to the performing arts. Hailing from the city, actress Rita’s professional debut was at the Liverpool Playhouse. She went on to star in the film, A Taste of Honey, a performance which won her a Golden Globe, Best Actress at Cannes and a British Academy Award. Among her wide-ranging work, she is best-known for roles in Doctor Zhivago, The Knack, Girl With Green Eyes and The Leather Boys. This year Rita will appear in the major motion pictures Broken Lines and The Calling.
- Nicholas Wainwright in recognition of his outstanding contribution to gemmology and business leadership. Regarded as Britain’s leading jewellery gem specialist, Nicholas first joined Boodles in 1967 and is now Managing and Creative Director, overseeing all Boodles designs. He is a fellow of the Gemmological Association, with over 35 years experience of sourcing, choosing and mounting the world's finest precious stones.
LJMU will also present two Corporate Awards to:
- The Linda McCartney Centre to recognise the sustained and important influence in promoting and delivering outstanding cancer care to the people of Merseyside. The centre, part of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, specialises in the treatment of cancer care and provides help for thousands of women and men
- The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation in recognition of the sustained and important influence of the organisation in promoting outstanding care and delivering service to the people of Merseyside. Established in 1990, the foundation aims to defeat lung cancer through research, campaigning and education and provides practical and emotional support for patients and others affected by lung cancer and smoking.
The Fellowships and Corporate Awards will be presented during LJMU’s forthcoming graduation ceremonies week commencing 20 July 2009.
Nominations for Fellowships and Corporate Awards are invited from both inside and outside the University and are selected on a confidential basis by a special committee representing the Board of Governors, the Academic Board and the Students' Union.
