Preserving our past
12 June 2009
Amy Ryan, a Level 3 student on the History of Art & Museum Studies BA programme, has been awarded the LJMU Student Citizenship Award in recognition of the voluntary work she has undertaken.
For two years Amy has volunteered for one day each week at the Conservation department of Liverpool Record Office. Using practical conservation techniques that she has acquired from her degree programme, Amy has repaired, cleaned and stored documents, images and maps which are important in Liverpool's history.
As part of her conservation work, Amy has worked on repairing and re-binding the entire collection of match programmes from Everton football club's history. Without the Record Office undertaking such work, many documents would decay and information about Liverpool's social and cultural history would be lost forever.
On hearing the news of her award Amy said: "I have never won an award like this before, so I really appreciate it. I am still volunteering there once a week and will do so for as long as I possibly can - I love it!"
There will be a presentation of the awards on Friday 26 June by LJMU Vice Chancellor Professor Michael Brown and Professor the Lord Alton, Director of the Roscoe Foundation for Citizenship.
