Hanging in the Balance Seminar - Amsterdam

Members of the ESF team organised a seminar ‘Hanging in the balance?
Combining work and family life in the Netherlands’ at The Hague School of European Studies (HEBO).
This was attended by members of the Women’s Network. Papers were presented on work and childcare in the Netherlands and the UK and the session ended with a lively discussion.
Conference Papers
Members of the ESF team recently attended the British Sociological Association Annual Conference ‘Lifecourse: fragmentation, diversity and risk’, (http://www.britsoc.co.uk/) at the University of York 21-23 March 2005.
Louise Wattis presented a paper on ‘Exploring the work-life balance: From legislation to lived experience’, Susanna Lloyd and Kay Standing presented ‘Lessons from the Netherlands on work-life balance’. Both sessions were well attended and generated a good discussion. Mara Yerkes also presented a paper from her research ‘Hanging in the Balance; Women and work life family balance policies in the Netherlands, Germany and the UK'.
Nicola Ronan and Liz James also did a poster presentation ‘Combining work and family life? The experiences of women in the UK and Netherlands’ which generated a lot of interest.
Louise Wattis presented a paper at the University of Amsterdam Institute for Labour Studies lunch seminars series on 7th April 2005
