Combining Work and Family Life ESF Funded Project
Welcome to Combining Work and Family Life
The research is an Objective 3, ESF funded project, focusing upon women's lack of progression within the labour market, recognising that a key factor contributing to this is their position as principal carers in the home. The main aim of the research is to explore the impact of government measures which have been put in place to address this issue, with a particular focus upon initiatives promoting flexible working practices.
In addition to the UK labour market, the research will also focus on the Netherlands . The Netherlands has been identified as a successful model of work-life balance policy due to the way in which part-time, flexible employment has been adopted as standard working practice, consequently supporting women's long term employment and progression. The Dutch model may therefore provide potential solutions to resolve issues around work-life balance in the UK .
As well as looking at policy, the research will aim to gain an in depth picture of womens work and care responsibilities.
The project has four main aims:
• To identify barriers to women's progression in the UK labour market.
• To examine the extent of the take up of work-life balance initiatives by women.
• To identify examples of good practice from the Netherlands .
• To provide recommendations of initiatives which would support women's progression in the labour market in the UK .
