Bicentenary Artist in Residence the year so far
LJMU is recording special moments from its Bicentenary year with the help of award-winning artist Julia Midgley as Artist in Residence.
Julia was a Reader in Documentary Drawing within LJMU’s School of Art and Design and a member of staff for 26 years before retiring in 2013.
Reportage is an important aspect of her studio practice. In her projects she records events with drawing creating beautiful and detailed watercolour sketches.
Capturing the Bicentenary year so far, Julia has sketched the return of our Roscoe Lecture Series at St George’s Hall attending both our Chancellor Nisha Katona’s ‘In Conversation With’ event in May and a lecture from astrophysicist Professor Andy Newsam back in March.
Julia has documented the many achievements of our students, from the joy and celebration of our March graduation ceremonies to the nerves and talent of drama students performing as part of the Battle of the Atlantic 80th anniversary commemorations in May.
In June, Julia visited this year’s Liverpool School of Art and Design Degree Show to sketch students’ work across fashion, architecture, and graphics. She said: “It was a real pleasure to visit the Art School which holds many happy memories for me.”
Last week she met with staff and students at LJMU’s annual Students at the Heart Conference and will next month attend July graduation. Look out for more of Julia’s finished sketches across social media.
