Dr Sulaf Assi is a reader in forensic intelligent data analytics at the school of pharmacy and biomolecular science in Liverpool John Moores University. Her research interests spread across multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary areas related to medication safety; patient safety; counterfeit medicines, drugs and lifestyle products; analytical chemistry, spectroscopy; mixed-method research and machine learning. She has published > 100 peer-reviewed international scientific publications including: 50+ peer reviewed articles; 60+ abstracts and conference proceedings and three book chapters in multidisciplinary research areas related to patient and medication safety; near-infrared, infrared and Raman spectroscopy; social media and online discussion forums; qualitative and quantitative data analysis and machine learning.
Sulaf has started her journey in 2003 upon her completion of a Bachelor in Pharmacy from Beirut Arab University, Lebanon. She then practiced as a clinical pharmacist for three years while undertaking her Masters in Pharmaceutical Analysis and Quality Control at Beirut Arab University, Lebanon (2003-2006). Then she pursued her PhD in Pharmaceutical Analysis at UCL School of Pharmacy, London-UK (2007-2010). During her Masters and PhD, Sulaf has worked alongside global collaborators from key organisations in the UK, Lebanon and beyond including the United Nations, several international governmental healthcare organisations, instrument manufacturers, pharmaceutical industry and academic partners from global universities.
She maintained these types of collaborations in her academic career post-her PhD that she has been building since 2007 during and after her PhD. These publications have not only been featured in scientific international publications but also in tools for identifying adverse events, on-spot methods and algorithms for detecting counterfeit products, public awareness leaflets and presentations, professional—based training, as well as instrumental applications that benefited users. Hence, she has been involving academics, practitioners, students and the university in her research who have taken part in all steps off the research procedures from the study design to dissemination of the findings.
On the scholarly level, Sulaf has successfully completed the supervision of three PhD students and 16 MRes students in forensic toxicology and is currently supervising five PhD students in the fields of pharmacy, forensic toxicology and machine learning. She is a reviewer in a number of peer reviewed journals and active co-organiser of conferences and symposia at national and international levels. She is also an active committee member of three societies and scientific groups including IEEE Development in eSystem Engineering Society, RSC Joint Pharmaceutical Analysis Group and RSC Molecular Spectroscopy Group. She is already a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a member of the Orders of Pharmacists in Lebanon and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
