Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning

Welcome to the Centre for Excellence in Leadership and Professional Learning

Sprinters on a running track - sprinters blurred

Established as one of the 74 HEFCE-funded Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning that ran from 2005-2010, LJMU’s Centre for Excellence in Leadership and Professional Learning addressed the themes of employability, leadership and enterprise within the curriculum.  Through its activities a range of approaches to employability, leadership and enterprise were developed, implemented and evaluated. Whilst the CETL was based within the subject areas of sport, exercise, dance, physical activity and outdoor education, many of the approaches developed are being adapted for use in other subject areas.

Leading learners, learning to lead….

The approaches developed through the CETL facilitate students to learn about themselves, as well as help them to acquire the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to plan and achieve their future aspirations. In enhancing the student experience, CETL activity extends from the initial transition of students into the HE learning environment through to the involvement of alumni in the design and delivery of programmes. It has also focused on supporting staff to advance their own personal and professional development through pedagogic research and scholarly activity.

Key examples of CETL activity that could be adapted by other subject areas include:

  • Personal Development Planning
  • Developing curriculum models for employability
  • Creation of student-led authentic work environments
  • Employer Engagement
  • Technology-enhanced learning
  • Research and evaluation

Further detail of these and other activities, along with some resources are accessible through the Activities link on the left-hand menu.
