Good Citizens Award
Good Citizens Award
LJMU believes that schools should be leading the way in encouraging young people to become caring, compassionate and tolerant individuals who have a real sense of civic responsibility. That's why our LJMU Roscoe Foundation for Citizenship established its Good Citizenship Awards, now presented in over 1,000 schools across the North West. These awards recognise the often overlooked contributions that young people from different cultures and communities make to society today.
Local companies have sponsored Good Citizenship Awards in all Liverpool schools and in the boroughs of Knowsley, Wirral, St Helens and Sefton and in the surrounding boroughs of Wigan and Warrington - making a total of 900 schools.
The awards for Liverpool, Sefton and Wirral schools are sponsored by many companies, but Knowsley and Warrington schools (155 in total) are all sponsored by ARRIVA NW. St Helens and Wigan schools (215 schools) are sponsored by Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales.
Each school chooses their "Good Citizen of the Year" and a representative from the sponsor company presents the bronze award - made by local sculptor, Stephen Broadbent.
In addition, ARRIVA sponsors an award ceremony each for Knowsley and Warrington, and St Helens has an annual citizens concert organised by Allanson Street Primary School. Wigan Education Authority has also hosted an award ceremony for Wigan schools.
More recently the LJMU Roscoe Foundation for Citizenship secured sponsorship from O2 and the Merseyside Colleges Association to fund awards for all the FE Colleges and Sixth Form Colleges and an award ceremony was recently held in the Roscoe Room at LJMU Headquarters in Rodney Street.
O2 has also sponsored ten awards for Liverpool’s “Virtual School”. The Virtual School supports all the children in the care of the Local Authority and these awards will be used to encourage young people who have to overcome many difficulties in their lives.
The Liverpool Echo has produced two supplements featuring stories about the Awards. The first was a limited edition and was distributed to all Merseyside schools, libraries, sports centres and public buildings. The second was sponsored by Barclays and was inserted into the main newspaper, reaching an audience of 160,000 readers.
The Foundation is grateful to major sponsors of schools including Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales (215 schools), ARRIVA (155 schools), North West Water (65 schools), Barclays (50 schools), 02 (35 schools), Mersey Docks and Harbour Company (20 schools), and many other companies who each sponsor 1-15 schools.
