Student Placements

At LJMU we recognise the importance and benefits of industrial placements. A placement provides invaluable industrial experience for the student, which enhances their skill base and provides them with a leading edge in job market upon graduation. These links also provide a vital conduit between the University and industry, ensuring we provide a relevant and up to date portfolio of courses, which continue to meet the needs of local and national employers whilst ensuring the development of our students' knowledge.

The students pursue two years of study within the University, one year on placement with a company or institution where they will undertake degree related work followed by a fourth and final year of academic study. The duties performed whilst on placement need to be relevant to the student's course with the minimum period of placement being 12 months (including holiday entitlement). A placement student will be supervised by an academic member of staff from the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences in conjunction with a placement supervisor who agrees to supervise the day-to-day aspects of the placement year. A member of the academic staff will visit the student and meet with the company supervisor three times during the placement year to monitor and report on student progress.

We have over 200 bright and enthusiastic students available for placement each year. These students study one of the following degrees (all our degrees are BSc with Honours):

  • Computer Studies
  • Software Engineering
  • Information Systems
  • Computer Games Technology
  • Computer Animation & Visualisation
  • Computer Forensics
  • Cyber Computing
  • IT and Multimedia Computing
  • Mathematics

A placement can provide clear benefits to an organisation and the student alike at a reasonable cost. Details of all our undergraduate degree courses are available online.

Support Available

Each placement has the full support of our dedicated Enterprise Unit at LJMU. The Unit is the central contact point for all placement related issues. We also have academic supervisors who will visit the placement student on site at least twice during the year and will be in telephone contact regularly too.
