Research Studentship OverviewSuch studentships will be for a maximum of three years. Awards are obtained by submission of a thesis and a successful viva voce examination. ProcedureStudents initially register for an MPhil. After a period of twelve months they can either:
Each student has a principal supervisor (DOS) and at least one other secondary supervisor. Research progress is monitored through the School's Graduate Student Committee. An annual postgraduate research conference is held each year (normally in March) at which all students are formally required to give a presentation on the progress of their research. For a three year full time research student, the normal schedule of presentations would be:
The specified research projects are supported by a research stipend in accordance with the School's or Research Council's current stipend rate. There may also be the opportunity for part-time academic work which may include marking, tutorial supervision and exceptionally lecturing. ConferencesResearch students funded by the School will have the opportunity to be sponsored to attend one national/international conference relevant to their research. The presentation of a paper will be required in order to qualify for this support. The funds can only be spent after authorisation by the Director of Studies and Director of School. Funds not spent, can by agreement with the Director of School be carried over from one academic year to the next. Conditions for ResearchAll students are provided with a networked personal computer. Special facilities such as work stations are also available and would normally be shared. Students may also undertake additional paid teaching and lecturing duties. The payment which is hourly would depend upon the nature of the duties and varies in hourly rate. (These rates are available on request) The maximum number of hours a research student may work is six per week.
