Leadership and Empowerment in Mental Health

It is now accepted practice in Health and Social Services that people who use their services play an active role in their decision making and planning processes. This short programme is for people who have used Mental Health services and wish to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to make a meaningful contribution to these processes.

Aims

The course has four main aims:

  • To ensure that students who use their experience of Mental Health services in a consultative capacity have the necessary practical and theoretical skills.
  • To contribute to mental health service users existing knowledge and expertise and also to empower them to be ale to lead change and improve Mental Health services.
  • To build upon prior experiences in empowering and imaginative ways, enhancing personal growth and releasing individual potential.
  • Embrace the challenges of diversity that service users bring to the learning process and the invaluable contribution this makes to our understanding of Mental Health issues.

Course Content

The course will focus on the following subject areas:

Concepts and theories of leadership and empowerment
Theories of Mental Health and issues of oppression
History of Mental Health
Models of advocacy
Organisational structures
Mental Health Social Policy
Time and change management
Effective chairing and membership of meetings
Reflective skills

These will combine both theoretical content and practical skills sessions

Admissions Criteria

All students will have experienced Mental Health services. Students will be expected to demonstrate via an application and interview that they have the skills to undertake the course and that they will be able to apply these skills in practice.

A study skills course will be offered to students who are identified as needing additional support.

Teaching and Learning

Teaching during the course will be delivered on one day per week over a twelve-week period. The programme will use a variety of teaching methods which will help students make the connections between the academic content of the course and its practical application.

Assessment

Students will write a reflective essay, which locates their experiences to the learning requirements of the course. It is hoped that this will help students effectively use their prior experience and knowledge. Also students will demonstrate that they can appropriately contribute to the running of formal meetings.
