Health Protection - a public health challenge

Are you interested in finding out more about how we can protect people from the threat of new – and some re-emerging infectious diseases?  Do you want to learn how you can help prepare for new health threats, such as terrorism, chemical hazards, radiation or other poisons?  Then this module is for you. 

Health Protection is an important component of the public health agenda in the UK and this module aims to provide you with a full appreciation of the issues and of the arrangements that are in place to deliver a comprehensive health protection service.  We will explore the investigation of outbreaks as well as non-infectious environmental hazards to which society is exposed and discuss your ability to participate and contribute effectively to the planned emergency response provided to emergencies, disasters and terrorist actions.

Career Prospects

During the course, you will work with other participants in a learning environment that encourages mutual understanding, skill sharing and partnership.  Since this programme is incorporated into the post qualification framework, for those studying at level three, completion gives you 15 credits that can help you on the pathway to a full Honours degree.  This CPD is also an option module on all routes of the MSc / PgDip Public Health programme and any student who studies and completes the module at Masters level will be able to receive credit transfer should they choose to go on to further study on any route of the MSc / PgDip Public Health within the next few years.

How will you study?

The programme starts at the end of June and runs one day a week for five weeks.  The contact time is supplemented with guided reading and extensive electronic resources.

Why study at the Centre for Public Health?

The Centre for Public Health at Liverpool John Moores University is one of the biggest public health departments in the country and is recognised for its research into violence as a public health issue, substance misuse - including alcohol and tobacco, sexual health, and health in the night-time environment.

How can I apply?

To enter at level three you will normally have a Diploma in Higher Education or equivalent.  To enter at Masters level, you will normally have a first degree.  If you do not meet these criteria the programme leader will ask for evidence of your suitability for study to be submitted for assessment, e.g. a portfolio of written and other work; papers presented at conferences, publications; reports and research proposals. 

Moreover we are looking for applicants with a passion or commitment towards protecting the public’s health.

The programme starts in June each year.
