Work based public health
Honours / Masters level
A 30 credit certificate of professional development (CPD) at either Honours level (equivalent to third year at university), or Masters level.
Public Health - can you make a difference?
Are you interested in developing your public health knowledge and skills and applying them in real life? Then why not join this innovative work based learning programme at Liverpool John Moores University.
There is a taught element, but the programme is largely work based and learning revolves around your own and your organisations needs, through the development of real projects that impact on the broader determinants of health. Tailored to fit your professional background, your learning will be built around projects like investigating epidemiological data, auditing and improving services, reviewing policy initiatives, a health impact assessment, or lobbying and advocacy work.
Career Prospects
The White Paper ‘Choosing Health: making healthy choices easier’ puts public health at the heart of the government agenda to improve the health of everyone across the nation. During the course, you will work with other professionals in a learning environment that encourages mutual understanding, skill sharing and partnership. Since this programme is incorporated into the post qualification framework, completion will give you 30 credits that can help you on the pathway to a full Honours or Masters degree.
How will I study?
The programme runs for eight months and starts in February. During the initial two months you will attend one day a week for interactive lectures, seminars and workshops. After that, you will meet regularly with an academic supervisor and a learning mentor as you plan, deliver and review a work based project. The contact time is supplemented with guided reading and extensive electronic resources.
Why study at the Centre for Public Health?
The Centre for Public Health at Liverpool John Moores University is one of the biggest public health departments in the country and is recognised for its research into violence as a public health issue, substance misuse - including alcohol and tobacco, sexual health, and health in the night-time environment.
