This course allows students/professionals with an interest or experience in Computer Games to further develop advanced skills and understanding of Computer Games technologies, tools, design and implementation techniques and research and development issues in the field.

The course is offered for graduates aiming for the role of the games programmer or technical manager within the games production team. It will make the multidisciplinary team context explicit, and develop appropriate knowledge and skills for that role within the team. In addition, it will examine research issues in the technology that will impact the role, prepare the graduates for inevitable technology changes, and develop the skills of evaluation and critical appraisal needed to deal with changes.

The aim of the course is to provide people of graduate status working, or planning to work, in the computer games industry, with the opportunity to enhance their career prospects by gaining additional knowledge and skills in the areas of games technologies and their applications.

The specific aims of the course programme are to:

  • Provide students with a fuller understanding of current and developing technologies used by the games industry
  • Facilitate students in the development of expertise and interest in topic areas of direct and complementary relevance to their work
  • Encourage students to become autonomous learners
  • Provide students with an understanding of current research issues in Computer Games Technology
  • Further develop students’ analytical, creative, problem-solving and research skills
  •  Provide a platform for career development, innovation and/or further study such as PhD

  • Games and entertainment development
  • Graphical applications development
  • Games production management
  • Interactive electronic publishing
  • Virtual reality development and application
  • Further research by PhD

Entry Qualifications

Applicants should normally have one of the following qualifications:

  •  Degree in Computing or Computing-related subject, including subjects with a significant core of computing, or
  • Degree equivalent professional qualifications, or
  • DipHE or HND plus a minimum of 3 years professional experience in Computing

However, students with non-standard qualifications are also encouraged to apply

Attendance

The courses are run under the University’s modular Masters programme. The mode of delivery is on a part or full time basis, with the exact attendance requirements determined by demand. Attendance for part-time study is during the daytime (to be arranged with the Programme Leader).
