Introduction


Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is an industry-focused leading edge institution located in the heart of the city of Liverpool. It has been a provider of education since 1823 and is one of the largest and most prestigious institutions in the North-West of England.


The School of Engineering, Technology and Maritime Operations is based within the Faculty of Technology and Environment. All teaching and knowledge transfer activity is supported by high quality applied research and collaboration with national and international companies.


The General Engineering Research Institute has achieved grade 5 in the two most recent UK Research Assessment Exercises, indicating research to an internationally excellent standard. It is also anticipated that the Institute will achieve this grade in the forthcoming assessment. The institute consists of four research groups comprising:


• Coherent and Electro-Optics: It has an international reputation for its contributions in the fields of fringe pattern analysis, optics, precision measurement and computer vision


• Radio Frequency and Microwave: The group has national and international applied research activities in fields related to radio frequency & microwave technologies, including Free-Electron lasers, THz technology, NDT and sensors, underwater communications, wireless technologies


• Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Tribology: The group specialises in research related to the grinding process in manufacturing


• The Engineering Development Centre: A technology transfer centre offering electronics hardware design and manufacture, with strong industrial links.

Career prospects

The course is designed for students who wish to gain a good understanding of engineering design and wish to build a career in this field. The latest computer based design tools are presented and employment/career opportunities in the field of engineering design are excellent as there continues to be a demand for students, educated to postgraduate standard, to take up positions in design engineering at the higher level. A demand also exists for those already in these positions to enhance their knowledge, understanding and skills through additional  study at postgraduate level.
