Female athleteThe School of Sport and Exercise Science provides an active and flourishing environment for postgraduate study. The School was awarded a 5* rating in the Research Assessment Exercise and a Quality Assurance Agency score of 24 in 2001. In this regard, the School is the only sports department in the UK to be awarded the highest grading for both research and teaching.

The School of Sport and Exercise Science has a long-standing tradition in the field of Sport Science. It initiated the first undergraduate Honours Degree course in Sports Science in 1975, and has developed a worldwide reputation for Sport Science teaching and research. It has hosted several international conferences and regularly receives visitors from overseas. It is active in pursuing links with both EC and international institutions with similar teaching and research interests.

The School houses state of the art laboratory facilities that are utilized to provide an excellent venue for challenging and innovative teaching and research. The postgraduate experience is a challenging one, which emphasizes critical reflection on both theory and practice.

The MSc. Sports Physiology is designed for students wishing to specialise in physiology related to sport and exercise, either for a professional career in sports science support work with athletes and/or for academic and professional development. Training is provided in laboratory-based skills and in the interpretation of laboratory findings. Opportunities are available for an applied placement supervised by accredited sport and exercise scientists. Students can utilize this experience as part of their own professional accreditation.

  • Enable students to demonstrate mastery of appropriate conceptual material

Careers

A wide variety of careers are available to students who hold a MSc. award. Many students choose to continue in education, research or applied sports science. Several students have gone into teaching and lecturing in schools, colleges and universities. Some have continued their studies with a Doctoral research programme. Others still, have taken positions in applying their sports science skills as applied practitioners in sports science support programmes within a variety of professional sports clubs, National Governing Bodies of sport, or as strategic sport science officers and consultants in professional sport settings. Students obtaining a MSc award may also follow a wide variety of career paths including teaching, management and business. Possession of a Masters qualification should enhance career prospects in these spheres of employment.

Entry Requirements:

Candidates will be required to have academic qualifications commensurate with entry to postgraduate study, and be able to demonstrate an aptitude for scientific study. Candidates would be expected to have a good honours degree (i.e., upper second or first) in sport science, science or a related discipline.
