Pre-initial Teacher Training Course for Language Graduates
Introduction
The French Extension Course is a short intensive course for beginners or near-beginners in French. It is designed to support graduates with a language other than French to achieve sufficient competence in French, enabling them to teach accurately and confidently at secondary level to at least key stage 3 (ages 11-14). It is a pre initial teacher training course.
The course is designed to prepare you to commence a secondary Modern Foreign Language (MFL) training course from September 2010 whether on a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) course or on a Graduate Teaching Programme (GTP). You must therefore have a place confirmed on a PGCE course or GTP by the time you start the French Extension Course.
What are the key features of the French Extension Course?
• The course is designed for beginners or near-beginners in French, and lessons will be taught mainly in the target language.
• You will have 240 tutor led taught hours over 11 weeks at LJMU.
• You will have a further 100 hours of study (taught and directed study) to undertake in Paris.
• You will be offered an appropriate programme of learning.
• You will be provided with a high level of individual learning support.
• There is an additional two week (40 hour) ab-initio course if you have no French whatsoever.
• If you already have some knowledge of French, you will be expected to prepare for the course with a pre-study refresher pack, which will be sent to your home address.
• You will receive a training bursary of £200 per week.
• You will spend 2 weeks in Paris studying and practising your French.
