Public Health (Analysis) MSc / PgDip
Full time over one year or part time over two years
Introduction
‘Choosing Health: making the healthier choices easier’ puts public health at the heart of the government agenda to improve the health of everyone across the nation. Crucial to successful delivery of this policy is the provision of information to motivate people to choose health and enable them to take advantage of the services on offer. ‘Better information, better choices, better health’ (2004) is a Department of Health programme of action, designed to address the need to develop a professional workforce that will work to ensure that everyone has access to the high quality information they require to make the informed choices about their health and their health care.
A shift in emphasis of Government policy towards health improvement and a requirement for increased use of evidence has resulted in an expansion in activity and significant changes to the structure of the wider public health workforce. Demand is high, but public health knowledge and skills are in short supply in the workforce – and population health analytical skills are in very short supply.
The NHS collects a huge amount of data. This needs to be converted into user-friendly intelligence to inform clinicians, commissioners, managers as well as the general public. The role of a population health analyst is therefore crucial to the successful delivery of the government agenda.
This educational programme seeks to provide an opportunity for appropriate education and training in both public health and analysis for individuals who already possess some basic analytical skills. This will serve to increase overall public health capacity as well as specific capability in a recognised area of weakness.
Successful candidates will be placed as a trainee in an appropriate health setting and will receive a salary of about sixteen thousand pounds.
How can I apply?
