Art and Design - MRes

Art and Design - MRes

LJMU students work

Introduction

MRes Art and Design is a year long research programme in which researchers explore and critically appraise individually negotiated research projects in Art and Design History, Theory and Practice. All students are introduced to a range of analytical and theoretical skills and approaches pertinent to the study of historical and audio/visual material.

The MRes programme offers a postgraduate qualification for potential research students unsure about committing themselves long-term to a doctoral programme. It also allows students to formulate and test their ideas in a range of arenas, including thesis, exhibition and symposium.

The programme is delivered jointly by Liverpool School of Art and Design and by the Research and Graduate School. Drawing on the expertise of established researchers in Art and Design the MRes aims to identify and explore broad critical debates relating to Art and Design theory and practice, to extend awareness and analysis of research practices and to critically examine a range of advanced research methodologies. Core modules in research proposition and development allow students the academic space to develop their own research project.

Modules are organised so as to provide a framework for students to enhance and consolidate their intellectual and practical achievements. We recognise that quality research often relies on a critical mass of co-ordinated effort in art and design, and there is enormous value in networking within and outside of the institution. Students are encouraged, as part of the programme, to make links with key local organisations as appropriate, including: Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art, Tate Liverpool, Bluecoat Arts Centre, National Museums Liverpool and FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology).

Career prospects

The MRes award indicates formal training in research methods. It is a qualification in its own right, equivalent to a modular Masters degree on a taught programme. It can also operate as the base from which a doctoral programme (PhD) is mounted. Students successfully completing are eligible to apply for PhD direct without undergoing the normal MPhil registration and subsequent transfer application to PhD.

Target awards

MRes Art and Design provides a bridge between established undergraduate study and Ph.D. research at Liverpool School of Art and Design. Thesis/practice and thesis only modes are possible. Awards within the programmes are PG.Cert (Res.), PG.Dip (Res.) and MRes Graduates of MRes are able to progress to PhD study.
Entry requirements

The programme offers an avenue into research for individuals from a range of backgrounds including: students with a first degree but with no training in research methods, employees in the cultural industries who seek a formal training in relevant research techniques, and international students. The MRes programme is open to both full-time and part-time, home and overseas students. Generally students should have a good first degree in a visual arts related subject, although applications from students with other degrees will be considered.
