Introduction
Throughout history and in all cultures, people have got together to watch others act out stories. Why do we do that? Because we know, somewhere deep down, that stories are very important to us. They help us to learn, to understand and to question.
If you have a love of both theatre and writing, this degree will enable you to acquire a grasp of everything it takes to become a playwright, poet, short story writer, screenwriter, actor, stage manager, producer and director and you will be able to specialise as the degree progresses.
But this joint honours degree is not just about acting or writing, it develops your ability to communicate, team work, confidence, risk taking, imagination, self-knowledge, and your organisational skills. These are personal attributes that any employer would value.

Introduction
Did the novels, plays and poetry that you studied for A Level only whet your appetite for more reading? Are you fascinated by the ways that literary texts can both reflect and influence the cultures that produce them? And do you want to go further and write your own novel or poems, short stories or screenplays?
This innovative degree allows you to explore the role of literature in society by analyzing literatures in English from 'the classics' to popular fiction, encountering forgotten and contemporary writers as well as past 'greats'. You will analyse poems, prose and plays to heighten your awareness of the craftsmanship required to become a published poet, novelist or screenwriter. You will acquire an understanding of all forms of creative writing, gradually specialising in one of the major forms, being taught by published writers and having your writing work-shopped in the industry-celebrated workshop model. You will leave university with knowledge of a range of writing in English, a portfolio of original work and a thorough understanding of what it takes to be a professional writer.
All staff are engaged in research and publication, and as this experience feeds directly into teaching, you will engage with the latest scholarly ideas, guided by people as inspired by literature as you are. You will enjoy a feast of visiting writers and will attend lectures, seminars, peer presentations, film-screenings, as well as the crucial writing workshops.
Our graduates' excellent analytic, communication and creative skills have ensured them positions in a wide variety of careers, including publishing, advertising, journalism and teaching.

Introduction
Do you write? Have you ever considered a degree course which is aimed at developing writing talent? If you think of yourself as a writer, or as someone who would like to become a writer and if you are considering studying for a degree, then this course may be of interest to you. There are certain common themes which run through the creative development of many writers, for example, intense practice in technique, experimentation with different forms, and extensive reading of literature. There are other factors:
- the development of the habit of regular writing and reflection.
- the use of skills of observation and the special stimulus gained from inspirational surroundings.
- interaction with a community of published and performing writers, both on the staff and visiting speakers.
Perhaps most important of all is the company of your peers; other writers who can inspire, encourage, share success and disappointment and offer constructive criticism. Creative Writing is designed to offer all of these.
The programme is taught by practising writers and offers students study in all their chosen genre as the degree progresses.
The degree is suitable for a number of careers such as journalism, teaching, publishing and the book trade, broadcasting and postgraduate study. For those intent on pursuing their writing in the future, this route offers an ideal foundation in technical skills.
Many graduates have gone on to have work published or performed. The skills offered by the degree provide an ideal foundation to secure regular employment and in the final year students can take an option to develop their freelancing skills.
