Introduction
Good design is central to the quality of our lives. Product Designers, in particular, should bring together an understanding of user needs and technical know-how in a creative mixture that delivers relevant, useful and enjoyable products.
Product Design and Digital Modelling at LJMU offers students the opportunity to develop a broad range of skills and abilities required to operate within the product design discipline. The course places a large emphasis on experiential learning with studio design projects forming the basis of learning throughout the three years. The integration of CAD and rapid prototyping facilities alongside more traditional working methods provides a rich and enjoyable experience.
Level One offers a broad-based approach, introducing the core skills required within product design. Modules include the study of Computer Aided Design, Material and Manufacturing Technologies, Design Visualisation and Design History. Level Two students engage in a number of projects that explore product design from a user and manufacturing perspective, team based and collaborative approaches to design projects play an increasingly important role. Many students develop interests and skills in specialist areas through their time studying on the course. Level Three students therefore have the opportunity to specialise towards a chosen career path, with a major self directed design project providing the focus on their final year studies.
Skills developed on the course enable a range of career opportunities within product design and the wider design industry. Along with these design related experiences we imbue our students with transferrable graduate skills such as time management, logical thinking, organisational awareness, communication and presentation skills, which will enhance any chosen career path.
