Geography
BA (Hons)
The BA (Hons) Geography specialises in human, social, cultural, political, economic and environmental aspects of geography from a social science perspective. The BA Geography involves looking critically at every aspect of modern life – from where people live, work and spend leisure time to crime, social deprivation, ageing, environmental conservation and globalisation.
Your studies at level one will give you a fundamental grounding in skills such as reading and referencing at degree level as well as key geographical issues such as:
-
environment and sustainability
-
issues affecting urban societies
-
issues around development in the third world
- cartography and its various meanings for geographers
At level two and three, the programme builds upon your earlier studies with modules related to:
- globalisation
- crime and its inter-relation with cities
- tourism, ecotourism and recreation
- environment-management and meanings
- practical skills in research and fieldwork
- managing geographical data through GIS (Geographical Information Systems/Science)
- the human geography of China or the USA and Canada
Special features of the BA Geography
Local, National and International Fieldwork
The programme has a number of special features for students. This includes the opportunity to take part in an exciting range of subsidised UK-based and international field courses. Level 3 students can visit either Beijing/ Shanghai or Vancouver/ San Francisco as part of their final year studies on China or the USA and Canada respectively. At level 2, students have a fieldtrip to Glasgow. At level 1, fieldwork is based in the North West of England.
Unlike many other programmes, Geography students are able to enrich their knowledge accrued in the classroom with their experiences in the field. Time and time again, students recall how fieldwork was one of the unforgettable highlights of the Geography programme at LJMU and was instrumental in both reinforcing their knowledge base and fuelling their appetite for further travel.
GIS and ICT
Another special feature of the BA Geography programme at LJMU is the emphasis on GIS and ICT more generally. GIS is an integral component of the vocational and applied element of our teaching, with core options at levels 1 and 2 and advanced options at level 3. Generating maps and converting information to cartographical form is widely used in our daily lives and in careers that range from mapping crime (e.g. crime analysts) through to decision-making on asset management in the housing sector, the best location for a shopping centre or community facilities (e.g. regeneration and planning officers). Geography students at LJMU get hands-on experience of working with the latest industry-standard GIS and data analysis software.
Geography and Employability
Work placements (experiential learning) in local schools, community agencies, environmental organisations and a variety of public, private and voluntary sector bodies/ companies more generally can make up part of your programme of study and is a very popular option module within this degree programme. From the testimony of past graduates, these special features have given them a competitive edge in the job market after graduation.
Whatever your choice of modules, you will graduate with the key subject specific and transferable skills demanded by today’s employers, including ICT proficiency, GIS competencies, the ability to apply a space/ place dimension to the understanding and solving of problems, analytical skills plus excellent inter-personal skills all gained through a variety of fieldwork and research-related projects.
