Introduction

This course has now fully recruited for 2010 entry but is available for study from 2011.

The past raises many questions, ranging from 'why do empires rise and fall?' to 'how did people enjoy themselves?'  To answer questions like these, historians examine evidence and consider views about the past.  Studying History at LJMU will equip you with the tools needed to examine those colourful and controversial events from the past which have shaped the future.

There are many varieties of History which complement one another and other subjects in the humanities and social sciences.  Our History degree provides an opportunity to investigate different kinds of history - political, economic, intellectual and cultural.  In addition, you can study the modern history of Britain, Europe, America and Asia.  You will therefore be able to focus on those aspects of the past that you find most rewarding.  The lecturers have published work on many of the topics they teach and appreciate the pleasures and challenges of exploring the past.

This degree develops your communication, research and problem solving skills.  The subject develops a rounded intellect which is an asset in a number of careers.  Some of our graduates now hold managerial and administrative posts, others have positions in the media, teaching and the military and others have studied a higher degree.  Whichever path you decide to take, there will be the opportunity for you to think about the future during optional work-related modules.
