Introduction
This course has now fully recruited for 2010 entry but is available for study from 2011.
Are you interested in contemporary and social issues and challenges? If so, then Sociology at LJMU could be the course for you. The Sociology programme at LJMU has been designed around the study of twenty first century concerns and contemporary sociological perspectives, and incorporates struggles and activism over race and racism; issues of gender, sexuality; and queer theory; green social policy; contemporary health issues such as inequalities and 'postcode lotteries' in accessing healthcare; and exploration of consumption and cultural belonging and change. These areas reflect the research interests of our staff, so you will benefit from an up to date learning experience delivered by passionate, committed, and supportive staff.
Sociology involves in-depth analysis of the ways in which societies are organised; how we experience the social world in relation to structures and cultural formations; and how we express our own identities. It also provides opportunities to develop skills of gathering; organising; analysing; and writing about different forms of data; communicating and working with others; and dealing analytically with diverse arguments and analyses.
Our Sociology degree provides students with a thorough intellectual grounding as well as equipping them with transferable skills which are sought after by many employers. Sociologists can find opportunities in research, academia, and teaching; policy analysis and consultancy; civil service; marketing and PR; human resources; writing and journalism; voluntary and community sector management; NGO and development work; criminal justice system; local government; health promotion and healthcare; and a range of other careers requiring high level graduate skills and attainment.
