About the Graduate Development Centre

Helping you achieve career success

The Graduate Development Centre (GDC) is here to help you achieve your career aspirations. The GDC Team including Careers Advisers, Employability Advisers and Trainers will connect you to the world of work and help you to beat the competition to get the job you want by developing essential WoW® (World of work) skills required by employers.

LJMU is serious about your employability. The WoW® initiative is straightforward and aims to help you get a job – it should give you the edge. It has these 3 components:

1. Work related learning e.g. placements, internships, vacation work and volunteering – done as part of your course or in your free time;

2. Graduate skills e.g. written communication, verbal communication, analysis/problem solving, ICT, personal planning/organising, numerical reasoning, initiative and team work – gained within your course and recorded with the help of your Faculty Skills Support Officers;

3. World of Work Skills Certificate (supported by Sony, Oracle, GKN, Shop Direct etc.) covering Self Awareness, Organisational Awareness and Making Things Happen and ending with an interview with an employer verifier– achieved by talking the GDC Team or your course staff.

What about careers guidance, CVs, job vacancies and interview practice etc? The GDC Team can help with these too and much more – The “Career Essentials Ready for Work” Programme is ideal for helping you deal with the basics to present yourself strongly ALSO GDC Careers Advisers and Employability Advisers are based in campus centres/learning zones and will help you individually

“If you have taken the time to apply for a job and been successful at securing an interview then you would be foolish not to utilise the GDC mock interview facility. No matter how confident you may be at your own interview technique there will be elements you can improve and I found that the GDC staff clearly have the experience to help”.

2009 Law Student.
