How to Reserve Items

Using the Library Catalogue, either online or from a dedicated terminal within the Learning Resource Centres (LRCs), you can reserve an item. This is particularly useful if an item is not immediately available, i.e. it is on loan to someone else.

Please Note: Full Time Undergraduate Students are no longer able to place reservations on items that are currently available on the shelf (apart from stock that belongs at the Remote Store).

In order to place a reservation you need to be signed-in to the catalogue. You can either Sign-in to the Library Catalogue and then try Searching for Items; or begin by Searching for Items first, and then be prompted to sign-in when you try to reserve an item.

  • To reserve an item you first need to view its holdings. To do this from the search results page, click the Availability link for the relevant item, as shown below:

  • If your search finds just one item, you will be taken direct to the Full View of Record displayed (below), click the All Items link:

  • Either way, the Holdings page for the item will appear:

    The Library Catalogue Holdings page

  • In this example, there are two copies that can be requested: one copy is a 21 day loan; one is a 7 day loan.
    • The 7 day loan copy is on the shelf in the LRC.
In this case, the quickest means of borrowing a copy would be to collect the 7 day loan copy from the LRC directly.
You can use the Class Number to quickly locate the copy within the LRC.
    • The other copy is currently on loan to someone else, and due to be returned on 16/02/09, as indicated in the Due Date column.
If this were the only copy held then it could be reserved by clicking the Request link to the left of the copy Description.

  • The Hold Request page will appear:

  • Ensure the Learning Resource Centre you wish to collect the item from is selected:

Choosing the LRC in the drop-down box

  • Confirm the details of the item and click the Request button to reserve the item:

  • If the hold request is successful, you will be informed like this:

    Request successful feedback page

  • If the hold request fails, for example, if you have already reserved the item, you will be informed in a similar way:

    Requst failed feedback page

After requesting an item you will be notified by email when it is ready for collection. General information about reserving items is available in Reserving Items.
