Search
The Library Catalogue always opens on the Basic Search screen. Type in your search terms under Type word or phrase and select an index under Search For (e.g. author/title) or leave it set to Word(s) anywhere which searches the whole record.
Click on Search to launch your search.
If you are searching for an exact title or author you would do better to search alphabetically use Browse A-Z.
Advanced Search
Advanced Search lets you build a more complex search by searching on up to three indexes at once for example if you know both the author and title. This will help to narrow down your search results. If it is important that your search terms are adjacent, choose Yes for Words adjacent. Click on Search to launch your search then click on the View Results link in the Results column to view the results.

Browse A-Z
The Browse A-Z search allows you to search the catalogue in alphabetical or numerical order. The system is set to browse the Title index but you can change this via the dropdown list. The closest match to what you search for will appear at the top of a scrollable list.

Collections
By default you will be searching the whole catalogue but you can limit your search to a particular collection (such as e-journals) by clicking on the Collections button on the left menu bar and choosing from the options. The name of the selected Collection then appears at the top of the screen. To return to searching the whole catalogue, return to the Collections choice screen and choose All LJMU Collections. Ensure that Search - Library Catalogue is displayed at the top of the page which indicates you are once again searching the whole collection.

Searching for E-Journals
Many but not all of the electronic journals to which we have access are available through the Library Catalogue. When you find the journal that you need, click on its title to open up the Full View of the record (as shown below) and click on the FetchIt button to see if we have online full-text access. If we do not, you will be directed to other potential sources from where you may obtain the journal, for example via Inter-Library Loans.
If the journal you want is not in the catalogue you may find it using E-Journals A-Z or FindRef. For help with all of our electronic resources please visit Electronic Library.
For further help with E-Journals please check the E-Journals FAQs. There may be particular issues that affect access to E-Journals for Off-Campus users; for more detail check the Off-Campus FAQs.

Search Results
After a successful search you will be presented with a list of records. The Results List shows how many records were found by your search. Click on the title to see full details of the record. Alternatively click on Availability to see where copies are held and whether they are on loan or not. The results list is initially arranged by author but you can reorder it by Title or Year by clicking on the appropriate column header.

Saving Search Results
From the Results List you can email selected records to yourself; opt to place them temporarily in your E-shelf or sign-in to save permanently. These functions allow you to save these results or to email them to yourself for future reference.
Previous Searches
To see a list of the searches you have made during your current session, click on Previous Searches from the menu bar.
