SCONUL Access

SCONUL Access to LJMU libraries

LJMU participates in the SCONUL Access scheme which is a co-operative venture between most of the Higher Education libraries in the UK and Ireland. It enables staff, research students, full-time postgraduates and part-time, distance learning and placement students to borrow material from other libraries. LJMU supports membership from all three categories or 'Bands'. Further information about this scheme is available from the SCONUL Access web site.

Full-time undergraduates cannot borrow under the scheme but they are allowed reference-only access by those member libraries which offer Band 'B' membership (this includes LJMU).

Students from member institutions who wish to apply for a LJMU SCONUL Access borrower card should visit the Welcome Hub at any of our three LJMU Learning Resource Centres with the following:

We cannot normally deal with applications immediately. We will contact you when your card is ready for collection. When you collect your card you will also receive a letter of authority from LJMU Computing and Information Services containing a username and password which will enable you to place reservations and check your borrower record via our Library Catalogue.

Holders of LJMU SCONUL Access cards may borrow up to four 21 day or 7 day loans at any one time and can place up to 4 reservations. Holders may also use their card for photocopying by adding credit via a cash loading machine. For further details please see Photocopying.

The following restrictions apply to LJMU SCONUL Access card holders:

  • They may not request inter-library loans.
  • They may not borrow audiovisual material.
  • They may not borrow short loan items.
  • They may not have access to our computing facilities.

You are responsible for items issued to your card. If you lose your card, please inform one of our LRCs immediately, so that its further use may be blocked. We normally charge £10 for replacement cards. We will waive this charge if your card is stolen and you provide a valid police crime number.
