Facilitating Healthy Ageing

Study 1: Facilitating Healthy Ageing: Neuroprotective Effects of Cognitive Training

Adam Moore, Bethan Mead and Peter Malinowski of the School of Natural Sciences and Psychology are looking for participants to take part in an experiment taking place in the psychology laboratories at Liverpool John Moores University (City Centre Campus, Byrom Street). In this study we are interested in the effects of two cognitive training exercises on aspects of our cognitive performance that weaken as we grow older.

Taking part in this study involves attending two EEG testing sessions spaced approximately 7 weeks apart. These sessions last 2.5-3 hours each. During these sessions, participants will complete some questionnaires and computer-based tasks while we record the electrical activity of the brain with sensors placed unobtrusively on your head (EEG recordings). When participants attend the first of these sessions they will be randomly allocated to one of three groups. One group will receive mindfulness meditation training, a second group will receive a “brain training” type of cognitive training, and a third group will form a waitlist control group that is offered one of the cognitive training exercises upon completion of their second EEG testing session. As reimbursement for the invested time and effort, participants will receive a £40 Tesco voucher.

Before you decide to take part please read the “Participant Information Sheet ”. Take time to decide if you want to take part and contact us with any questions you may have. If you are aged between 55 and 75 and have normal or corrected-to-normal vision you are invited to take part. However, if

  • you are suffering from a mental health condition
  • you have been diagnosed with any cognitive impairments (e.g. dementia)
  • are currently taking anti-depressant medication
  • or are suffering from a neurological disease (e.g. epilepsy)
  • you have taken part in any of our previous studies (details below)

We kindly ask you not to take part, as these conditions may have an effect on the data we want to record and may make it impossible to interpret them.

Unfortunately if you have taken part in any of the experiments listed below we cannot invite you take part in this study:

  • Mindfulness and Meta-Cognition (October 2011 – March 2012) with Paul Pozuelos and Bethan Mead
  • Mindful Eating Program (January 2012 – present) with Naomi Fisher and Peter Malinowski
  • Healthy Ageing: Neuroprotective Effects of Being Mindful (September 2011 – December 2011) with Bethan Mead and Adam Moore
  • Meditation Practice and Attention Network Dynamics (February 2010 - Autumn 2010) with Adam Moore and Peter Malinowski.

If after reading the Participant Information Sheet you are eligible and would like to take part in this study, please complete the screening form below to register an interest. One of our team will then contact you to discuss enrolling you in the study. Any data you provide will be treated as confidential.
