Requesting Books
You may request up to 5 books at any one time.
- To request an item go to the Library Catalogue.
- Search for the item you require.
- Use the Request Item link and when prompted enter your LJMU username and password.
- Select Home Address as your pickup/delivery location.
If you are not given the option of Home Address but feel that you are entitled to postal loans please contact us stating your name, barcode number and distance learning course. On confirmation of your details we will activate postal loans on your library account and inform you.
If you experience any problems placing requests using the library catalogue, contact us either on 0151 231 3179 or the online help form, with details of the book(s) you wish to borrow. Please make sure you include your course details.
If the requested books are in stock and available for loan they will be dispatched to you, free of charge, within 5 working days of receipt. You will be informed if we experience a problem obtaining an item.
Returning Books
You are responsible for the costs incurred when returning books by post. All items should be returned or renewed by their due date. You need therefore to allow time for them to reach us.
You are responsible for the books reaching us and are recommended to use a secure method of posting. You will be provided with an address label, and we would be grateful if you would reuse the Jiffy bag provided.
Preferably items should be returned to the site they were despatched from, but to save on postage if items have been received from multiple sites it is possible to return all items to one of the sites (see below for address details).
- Aldham Robarts Learning Resource Centre
- Avril Robarts Learning Resource Centre
- IM Marsh Learning Resource Centre
Loan Periods
21 day loan items will initially be issued for a period of 5 weeks.
7 day loan items will initially be issued for a period of 3 weeks.

To renew your books online follow the instructions available from the Library Renewing Items page.
Items will be renewed for the extended loan periods (as above).
You can always contact us for help and advice.
Fines
Fines will be charged at a rate of 10p per day for 21 day loan items or 25p per day for short loan items that are not returned on time. For items that have been requested by other borrowers, fines will charged at a rate of 20p per day for 21 day loan items or 50p per day for short loan items.
Please note that you will not be permitted to renew items if you owe £10.00 or more.

Books will only be posted to those students registered on distance learning courses living in the United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland).
The following categories of items may not be borrowed:

Items in these categories are not normally available for postal loan. We may copy parts of such materials for distance learners. Use the photocopy request service if you wish us to send/fax pages to you.
Reference books.
Using the photocopy request service we are willing to photocopy up to one chapter of reference works (within current UK copyright law).
Journals, Newspapers and other Serials.
Using the photocopy request service we are able to photocopy one article from a single issue of a journal (within current UK copyright law). Also check the Library Catalogue to see whether the journal you are interested in has electronic access.
