By making small changes in our working practices we can all help to minimise our impact on the environment. Below are a list of services we offer. If you have any ideas on improving our practices, please do not hesitate to contact us.                                                             

Removal Services

Paper Eurocart
Paper recycling boxes are provided with clear bags. Items that can  be placed in the boxes are clearly identified. When  bins & boxes are full they should be placed by the side of the bins for removal. New bags will be provided by Infrastructure Services Staff. Please call  Ext 5731 for a supply of these boxes. Clear bags are obtainable by contacting the relevant Help Desk.  

 Cardboard Eurocart
Before removal, all cardboard must be flat packed and placed by the general waste bins for removal by the General Assistants. When larger items  have been delivered for example, packed in cardboard, this waste can be removed  by contacting the relevant Facilities Supervisors .

Toner Cartridges

These are now recycled by Ikon through the print strategy.

Printer Cartridges

Bags can be provided for printer cartridges to be sent to charities. Please phone Alun Thomas Ext 5731.


Furniture
Disposal of  furniture ( including filing cabinets ) is  arranged through Procurement Services. Contact Shaun McDonald  Ext 3493. Furniture will be advertised on CWIS. Any furniture not claimed through Purchasing Services can be donated to local charites or organisations provided an indemnity form is completed before removal from University premises.Forms can be obtained from Procurement Services Ext 3493 or A.Thomas Ext 5731.    
Glass   Glass recycle icon

External wheelie bins are now sited in the waste & recycling areas of various buildings for the recycling of glass. Staff can place household glass bottles & jars in the bins provided. All bottles & jars must be washed to prevent a fly or insect infestation. Laboratories & technical areas will not be affected, their systems for glass removal will remain the same. If you require additional bins, please contact Alun Thomas Ext 5731  

I..T. Equipment
Disposal of I.T equipment is managed initially by Planning & Information 
 
Oil Large Equipment / Machinery
For disposal of these items contact Alun Thomas Ext 5731. 
Plastics / Cans               
There are about 50 different types of plastics, with hundreds of varieties. All plastic is recyclable using the yellow bins. Cans can be deposited in the red bins. If you would like to be supplied with these bins, please contact Alun Thomas Ext 5731.   
WEEE Directive ( Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment  - Implementation Dec 2006 )
This European Directive aims to conserve landfill and support more sustainable development by providing an impetus to boost recycling.  The University provides a free of charge recyling service for all waste electrical & electronic equipment.

Fridges / Freezers

Contact the relevant Campus Help Desk  for removal & disposal.

Batteries

Staff & students are encouraged to use the units provided to avoid any batteries going to landfill.

New clear battery recycling containers have been provided by LJMU. These containers are for household / domestic batteries only, for larger or unusual shaped batteries please contact Alun Thomas  Ext 5731. 

Recycling Units can be found at most reception desks and School Offices. If you require an extra container please contact Alun Thomas  Ext 5731.

Oil Based Paints
Oil based paints are classed as hazardous waste. For removal please contact Alun Thomas  Ext 5731.
