Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) Courses

Liverpool John Moores University offers a range of Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses (subject to allocation) for those students preparing to start their teacher training on either a Postgraduate/Professional Certificate of Education (PGCE), or a Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP).

LJMU’s courses range from 1 unit, to 18 unit (1 year) in length depending on subject, and the subject knowledge need identified in the conditions of any offer made by a training provider, such as LJMU. These are usually in subjects identified as Secondary National Shortage Subjects, such as Maths, Modern Languages and Science, and are designed to enhance a trainee teacher’s subject knowledge to a depth sufficient to be able to go on to teach that subject following their initial teacher training.

  • LJMU also offer its own range of courses in areas not covered by TDA funded SKE courses. These courses are listed below and course fees will vary, however will not carry any of TDA support.

Eligibility for an SKE course

To be eligible for an SKE course, you need to satisfy the following criteria:

  • you need to have applied for, and been offered a place on a PGCE/GTP programme in England AND
  • you also need to have a need for subject knowledge enhancement identified by the provider you have applied to – this will usually be expressed as a condition of your offer (through GTTR, or direct from your GTP provider)
  • finally, you also need to meet the TDA funding criteria (this will usually have been confirmed by your PGCE/GTP provider prior to being offered a place).

If you have any doubt about your eligibility, or would like further information about any of our SKE courses, please contact us at traintoteach@ljmu.ac.uk or on 0151 231 5340.
