Abdus Salam

  • Salam was born in Jhang, a small town in what is now Pakistan. 
  • His father was an official in the Department of Education for a poor farming region. 
  • At 14, he gained the highest entrance exam marks recorded by the University of the Punjab.
  • In 1946, he was awarded a scholarship to St. John’s College, Cambridge.
  • Salam won The Nobel Prize in Physics 1979 for his contributions to the theory of the unified weak and electromagnetic interaction between elementary particles.
  • At the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, he instituted ‘Associateships’ for deserving young physicists that brought together students and subject experts.
