Amane Nishi (1829 - 1897)
- Nishi was born in Tsuwano province, now located within the Shimane prefecture, Japan
- He attended Laiden University, Netherlands, specialising in philosophy and Western studies.
- Back in Japan, he worked as an administrator at the Ministry of Education and was President of the Tokyo Normal School.
- Nishi is credited with creating the term ‘Shinrigaku’, originally meaning mental philosophy, intellect, sensibilities, and will.
- Shinrigaku is now used in Japanese to mean ‘psychology’.
