Meet the author: Rose Thomas
As part of our programme of events for Black History Month 2019, we are delighted to welcome local author Rose Thomas to LJMU. Rose will talk about her 2018 novel Bess: Now That I Have Found the Words. Bess is our book choice for October and there are multiple copies in the LJMU libraries.
Bess, young, black and part of a new generation growing up in post-war Liverpool, faces age-old racism amidst new opportunities for work, and personal, social and sexual exploration. Returning to Liverpool from her home in London, Bess ponders her early life, from innocent au pair to a middle-class family through to becoming a call-girl in the local clubs in the 1970s, to a rebirth in consciousness following the Toxteth Riots of ’81, and the joys and troubles of her life in between. This is a beautiful debut novel that moves and inspires in equal measure.
This event is presented in collaboration with Writing on the Wall and is open to the public as well as LJMU students and staff.
