Preparing you for a career in education

Education Studies and Early Childhood Studies

With a growing external profile, our Education and Early Childhood Studies programmes provide an excellent student experience enhanced by a flourishing culture of research and consultancy. This subject area has a reputation for curriculum innovation, with a number of successful curriculum enhancement bids, fantastic student internships and exceptional teaching, having received teaching excellence awards in recent years. All of our Education Studies courses come highly recommended, with student satisfaction rates at over 90% according to the National Student Survey 2015.

Teacher training

If you are interested in our initial teacher education programmes or professional development courses for teachers, LJMU has a well-established reputation in these areas. We deliver innovative approaches to initial teacher education; we are one of a small number of providers who offer a PGDE (Postgraduate Diploma in Education), which is awarded more Masters credits than a standard PGCE course for the same duration of study and cost. We're ranked fifth for undergraduate initial teacher education provision according to the Good Teacher Training Guide 2016. We offer a unique Learning Development Support programme for students who may not have formal qualifications, but who have a wealth of experience in the field, to obtain an undergraduate degree. There are two routes into teaching: University-led courses or School Direct. Find out more about these options from our Teacher Training section.

Professionally relevant learning

You’ll learn amongst some of the best – all of our teacher educators are successful teachers who maintain strong links with schools, local authorities, national CPD networks and professional bodies. To help ensure you receive the most up-to-date, relevant learning to prepare you for your career, our academic staff are actively engaged in a number of projects and initiatives:

  • Contributing to the development of national education policy and government initiatives
  • Helping to shape policies relating to curriculum development, school leadership and governance, and initial teacher training
  • Delivering a range of successful projects in collaboration with universities and education providers in Sweden, Poland, Greece and Singapore
