Faculty of Engineering and Technology
Welcome to the Faculty
The Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) is a creative, enterprising and dynamic faculty
We are a pioneering Faculty, dedicated to creating and communicating knowledge and opportunities to ensure that all of our students can excel within their chosen discipline. We offer courses and carry out research, enterprise and knowledge transfer across a diverse field, in areas ranging from computing and engineering to maritime studies, built environment and product design to mathematics.
Thanks to our wide range of courses, all of which are designed to meet market needs, our graduates have excellent employment opportunities, with support from our leading academics and industry professionals. Our research students have impressive completion rates and work in a wide range of globally relevant subject areas. All students also benefit from our links with employers, our course accreditation and our commitment to supporting equality, diversity and inclusivity in STEM.
As a Faculty we are very proud of our varied research landscape. From sensor technologies to maritime logistics, sustainability and infrastructure our teams of researchers have achieved excellence in their fields, producing high-quality, high-impact work; work that not only has commercial application, but also has a positive impact on both economic and social wellbeing.

A global reputation for excellence
We have eight first-rate research institutes and centres.
Four Units of Assessment (UoA 9 -Physics; UoA 11 - Computer Science and Informatics; UoA 12 - Engineering; and UoA 13 Architecture, Built Environment and Planning) with more than 150 FET members were submitted in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. All four UoAs have demonstrated a significant increase in the volume of world-leading research outputs from REF 2014 to REF 2021. Among top performing areas were Astrophysics, where 97% of the research outputs was world-leading or internationally-excellent; and Engineering with 96%. Both Astrophysics and Engineering have their research impact rated 100% world-leading or internationally-excellent. 80% of the faculty’s research is rated world-leading or internationally-excellent.
In the future, we will continue to strengthen our research centres and institutes by investing in state-of-the-art facilities.Find out more about our research
