Diploma in Nautical Science Chief Mate Unlimited/Master Unlimited (STCW II/2)

Duration: 10 Months – intakes are in January, May and September each year

Prerequisites:

  • Valid OOW STCW II/1 Certificate of Competency;
  • 12 months’ watchkeeping service while holding an OOW unlimited CoC;
  • Medical fitness Certificate (ENG1 or equivalent) including eyesight requirements
  • International Applicants should hold a UKVI approved English Language Qualification (equivalent to IELTS 5.5 average)

Accreditation/Approval: Merchant Navy Training Board, Maritime & Coastguard Agency

Course description: The program consists of Academic Modules and Additional Components. It builds on the academic study completed at OOW.

The academic components (approved by MCA) include the following topics: 

  • Bridge Management
  • Marine Engineering and Structures
  • Navigation and Meteorology
  • Shipboard Business and Management
  • Shipboard Operations and Stability

To obtain a STCW chief mate certificate students require additional short courses, an SQA written examination as well as an MCA oral examination. The following are integrated into this programme of study and include 

  • External examinations for Navigation and Stability;
  • MCA Oral examination;
  • The mandatory short courses include:
  1. Navigation Equipment & Simulation Training (Management level) - NAEST (M) (students should note there are additional prerequisites for NAEST (M)  -see NAEST (M) details above. An ECDIS course can be scheduled if required))
  2. Human Element Leadership & Management (Management level) – HELM (M)
Additional mandatory courses not normally scheduled into the programme are:

  • Medical Care Onboard Ship (available in Liverpool)

Students are advised to complete the Medical Care course in advance of starting the programme if practicable.

After successful completion of the programme you will be awarded the following qualifications:

  1. Diploma HE in Nautical Science – issued by LJMU. (Note, there is a pathway to BSc (hons) Nautical Science top-up degree - see below)
  2. Chief Mate Certificate of Competency (STCW Reg II/I) obtainable directly from the MCA after completion of all pre-requisite courses and MCA oral exam
  3. STCW Certificates for short courses completed
