Ballast Water Management

Duration: Two days

Prerequisites: None

Accreditation/Approvals: Liverpool John Moores University

Overview: The IMO’s International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention) requires all ships to implement the Ballast Water Management Plan which defines requirements to manage sediments and the ballast water as specifically applicable to the ship. These ships are also required to have a ballast water record book and an International Ballast Water Management Certificate.

Whilst the maritime world is adopting these changes, an interim solution is to continue with mid-ocean ballast water exchange but eventually all ships will be required to install a ballast water treatment plant.

Based on BWM convention, this two day course provides an insight into all the requirements related to BWM Convention. The course looks at the specific requirements given in the Convention and also the planning required by ship managers, port authorities and others for fully implementing these requirements to the satisfaction of both the port and flag state authorities.

This course is offered on demand, please email Maritime@ljmu.ac.uk for more information.
